This army is an opponent for the Ice Barbarians army. This is mostly made up of D&D Miniatures (DDM) pre-painted plastics, picked because of their transparent bluish ice color. The basing used is the same Ice Basing as the Ice Barbs.
These figures inspired this army, more than anything else. Back in the day (2008 or so) they cost me a buck or less each. Beautiful figures.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Elite Foot (no battle cards): 4 pts each
These figures are DDM prepaints, unmodified. Love them.
Chraal are vicious predators (look at all those teeth!).
I've got no idea what these figures are supposed to be in the D&D universe, but they are the right color palette to be part of my Ice Monster army, so here they are. The frozen waste of the North must be full of monsters, that's all I can say.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Warband (Deadly +2, Slow -1/2): 4.5 pts each
These figures are DDM prepaints. I don't think I modded them at all.
White Dragons have a breath weapon of ice. To make it cheaper I often take Delayed Entry on the dragon -- it has Flying so can come in from Away, and dragons are unreliable allies, which works well thematically.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Knight (Deadly +2, Flying Slow +1, Massive +1): 8 pts each
This figure is from Mage Knight; the paintjob is unretouched (I might have messed with the eyes a bit, I don't recall now). Unlike most of the DDM transparent plastic figures, it can usually be found on ebay or similar for a fairly reasonable price.
Another figure that would force me to make this army, if I wasn't already so forced.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Behemoth (Slow -1/2, Hearten +1): 4.5 pts each
DDM prepaint. I might have touched up the drybrush white a little, otherwise unmodified (except cut off the base, as with all DDM prepaint plastics).
Like many DDM prepaints, these guys aren't cheap on ebay, but if you're doing an ice army, you gotta do what you gotta do, and what you gotta do is buy at least one of them. I've got three, but I got them largely before they got expensive.
I'm not entirely decided on how to fit these figures into the culture of the Ice. As listed (in the D&D pantheon) the figure is intended as a resident of a supernatural evil plane with lots of other (non-Ice, and therefore for this army non-interesting) devil creatures. Whatever, don't care. It works great for my Ice Monster army. The only sad part is that these figures are relatively rare, and collected by those who collect DDM figures, and as a result getting this figure on ebay or similar runs $15 to $25 these days, which is way more than I choose to pay for prepainted plastics.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Knight (no battle cards): 4 pts each
This is a DDM prepaint, unmodified from its original form.
Yeti are monsters in one sense, but they aren't particularly magical or made of ice, so I sometimes use this guy with the Ice Barbarian army instead. After all, they work with wolves and wooly mammoths (natural creatures), so a Yeti might be fine.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Behemoth (no battle cards): 4 pts each
This puppy is a multi-piece metal casting; I don't remember who makes it. It is super heavy. Painting it was a bit more complicated than it looks. Yes, I primed it white, but then did a very light blue wash, then drybrushed white again, and only then painted the details.
If the Ice Archons hadn't inspired me to build this army, this Ice Titan would have. This guy is usually the general for the Ice Monster army, because ain't nobody going to gainsay what he tells you to do.
In Fantasy Triumph this is rated as:
Behemoth (Deadly +2, Armored +1/2): 6.5 pts each
This is a DDM figure, repainted lightly where the original paint was poorly placed (as sometimes happens with prepaints). The beard was something different; I like it better as gloss white. I used gloss white to retouch the fur edges on his costume as well. But the glorious part (the translucent ice) is as it came.
Love these guys.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Raiders (no battle cards): 4 pts each
The original figures are DDM, called something like Fire Serpent or the like. I primed them white and painted them in the color palette shown to make them Ice Serpents. The painting was a little fussy on the dorsal plates, as it involved painting dark blue first, then several coats of light blue to give the outline effect.
Another nice transparent ice figure.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Elite Foot (Hearten +1): 5 pts each
The rating as Elite Foot with Hearten works well with the Ice Archons, who are Elite Foot straight up. The Ice Trolls look a bit tougher than the Archons.
These figures are prepainted plastic "Dreamblades" figures, for a chess-like skirmish-like game (Dreamblade) that came out in 2006, making use of the Golden Age of pre-painted plastics. This is the original paintjob.
Love this figure, and it (barely) fits on an 80mm base. In play I often take Delayed Entry (-2) with this figure and its offspring (unpictured). Its Away battle card represents its ability to travel under the snow and ice by tunneling, so Delayed Entry makes a lot of sense for it.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Behemoth (Fast +1/2, Away +1/2): 5 pts each.
This figure is a DDM prepaint. As often happens in prepaints the paintjob was a bit sloppy and needed a bit of touchup; I did that while keeping the original color scheme for the figure.
This figure is a DDM prepaint, called Giant Centipede or some such. Looks great as Remorhaz Spawn, though. I had to totally repaint them to fit the color scheme for Remorhaz and the army; they used to be something black and orange-ish. In play I often take Delayed Entry (-2) with these stands. Its Away battle card represents its ability to travel under the snow and ice by tunneling, so Delayed Entry makes a lot of sense for it.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Remorhaz Spawn are represented in Fantasy Triumph as:
Warband (Fast +1/2, Away +1/2): 4 pts each.
Vicious, but tiny, spirits of ice with wings.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Rabble (Fast +1/2, Away +1/2): 3 pts each
DDM prepaints, unmodified.
You could give these guys Flying instead of Away, but that's largely a waste of points since Rabble can move through most friendlies anyway. And it makes it easier to shoot them up (and they're easy enough anyway). Give them Away, hop them over the enemy army into their backfield early in the game, and then be irritating in difficult terrain thereafter.
I've based up a number of heroes for this army (and similar ones I've made for other people). These are two such heroes. The Ice Witch is a DDM prepaint; may not actually have that name. The other guy with the icy spellblast is mostly that color already, but his leggings and boots were way too warm colored, so I repainted them to fit the schema of the army.
