SA 1700 - SA 3319
Numenor was established early in the Second Age by the Valar, after the ruin of Beleriand in the War of Wrath. Before SA 600 they had little or no contact with other realms. From SA 600 to 1699 they had contacts with Gil-galad in Lindon, and made contact with human realms as teachers, but did not field armies. In SA 1693 began the War of Sauron and the Elves, where Sauron destroyed Eregion and by SA 1699 had overrun Eriador was on the brink of conquering Lindon. Numenor sent a fleet to intervene and destroyed Sauron’s armies, driving him back to Mordor. By SA 1800 Numenoreans started settling on the coast of Middle Earth as lords rather than teachers, establishing Umbar. In SA 2280 a fortress was built to protect Umbar; by then Sauron had rebuilt his strength and mastery of nearby human Kingdoms and was threatening Numenorean enclaves along the coast. In AS 3261 the last king of Numenor, Ar-Pharazon the Golden, landed in Middle Earth with an army so mighty that Sauron’s army fled, and Sauron surrendered as a prisoner. In SA 3319 Numenor dared to assault the Undying Lands, leading to the destruction of Numenor (the whole island and all its people, save nine ships led by Elendil).
Numenoreans were very tall, gifted with long life, and great wisdom. In war they were powerful, destroying the armies of Sauron when he was at the height of his power on two separate occasions.
