My Nikephorian Byzantine army is entirely of Essex figures (except one figure, I think). 15mm scale, as are all my historical armies.
Pavise in Triumph.
Pavise don't have to be this many figures, but I really like the look of the formation of 3 spearmen in front, then 4 archers, then 2 archers and 1 spearman in a rear rank. Looks great.
Figures are BZA17 and BZA19
Shieldwork here is all custom.
Horsebow, I think?
BZA20, anyway
Custom shields
Cataphracts.
Custom shields.
Here's a good example of use of Miracle Dip to outline chainmail and fabric patterns.
I believe that the two mace wielders in the center are both modified figures; I chopped their lance shafts off and added a bit of brass pipe (hollow brass rod) to make maces.
BZA21
Tagmatic Elite Cavalry.
BZZA22 and BZA23.
Custom shields.
Heavy Foot. Mixed of a number of different figure codes; I think the 1st and 3rd from the left are actual Varangian codes BZA27; 2nd from the left is a Viking, and the rightmost might even be an Old Glory figure (the rest are Essex).
Custom shields. I'm particularly pleased with the raven.
Later Varangian Guards were uniformly outfitted. This is my interpretation of how they would have looked. Not sure about their code.
Wagon mounted ballistae (Artillery).
BZA28 crew; XEQ11 ballistae. I think the wagon is also Essex; not sure what code.
