This army is mostly made up of prepainted plastic miniatures; D&D Miniatures (DDM). The fun part here was designing it to fit the concept of a Bullywug (Toad-man) army.
The mainstay of the Bullywug (Toadman) army. The bulk of the army is like 8 of these stands.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Light Spear (Slow -1/2): 2.5 pts each
Slow because they've got squatty legs, not really well suited for bipedal sprinting.
D&D Minis. These three are good, but many times the plastic spear of this sort of mini gets really bent (warped) and there isn't a good fix for it. If I wasn't so lazy I'd probably replace all of them with brass spears or something, but there you are.
This figure is a natural history museum plastic toy. There are lots of giant toads out there in gaming-land, some even nicer than this one, but it amused me, so here it is.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Knight (Terrain Affinity: Marsh, Stream, +1/2, Slow -1/2): 4 pts.
I've only got one of him, because the basis of the army is not marsh-moving Knights. But it's fun to have one marsh-moving knight, even if it's a slow one.
The alliteration is great, but these are sorta-kinda the elite of the Bullywug army -- ready to break heavy foot. But not super good at it.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Warband (Slow -1/2): 2.5 pts.
DDM figs. Slow because they've got squatty legs, not really well suited for bipedal sprinting.
In scale these aren't "giant" in the sense of "bigger than a small van", they are "giant" in the sense of "bigger than a warthog". Big enough to fight on the side of the Bullywugs, of course.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Rabble (no battle cards): 2 pts.
A mix of found plastic toys and inexpensive DDM figures, if I recall correctly.
The Mighty Toadlord Himself, Master of the Swamp and all things Rotting and Sodden, here he is!
This started as a combination of a DDM figure (the Bullywug leader) and a resin miniature (maybe from Eureka Miniatures? They have a cool frog range of figures). The squat stance of the Toadlord allowed his crotch to be curved and carved out to fit the back of the frog he rides. Add a blanket of greenstuff on the back of the big frog, paint the whole thing, and we're good.
Based up on a mounted base like this I could have rated him lots of different ways, but I see Mr. Toad here as fundamentally not an aggressive fighter -- not a Knight or JavCav. And not super maneuverable like a Horsebow. So he is rated as:
Elite Cavalry (Terrain Affinity: Marsh, Stream, +1/2, Hearten +1, Armored +1/2, Slow -1/2): 5.5 pts.
If I like the thought of Toadlord being a magician of some ability I might give him Negate Magic Self or Ranged Attack (the second representing his spellcasting ability). He's not a super mage, so no Spellblast or Mindblast.
These guys also serve as low-caste warriors in the Yuan-Ti (Snakeman) army.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Light Foot (Slow -1/2): 2.5 pts each
DDM figs. Slow because their little biped legs clearly aren't the fastest method of propulsion.
In a swamp army, having a giant alligator ally seems like a good thing. Hopefully he doesn't like the taste of toad or bullywug.
In Fantasy Triumph Khumat is rated like this:
Knight (Terrain Affinity: Marsh, Stream, +1/2, Slow -1/2): 4 pts.
DDM fig.
If you've got a cool army with a theme, it is double extra cool if you've got a die that fits the theme, for playing that army.
Here it is! The right die for playing an army based on toads.
I haven't got any Heroes for the Bullywug army. Nor a camp neither -- wonder what type of camp would be appropriate for a Bullywug society living in the swamps? I might want to base up some Heroes with single Bullywug figures, though, as command control is going to be nasty in the Bullywug world.
