This Lizardman army had its genesis in two things. I always really liked the Games Workshop "Skinks" (part of their Lizardman range for Warhammer, back in the day). I didn't much like their other figures, though, and their big guys are always super expensive. Then I found some prepainted plastic museum toy dinosaurs (Triceratops, Ankylosaur, Stegosaur) that were gorgeous, and (just barely) fit on an 80mm square base. And I was off.
Well, being "off" took forever, because I wanted to paint the skinks (the base lizardmen of the army) in different unit colors, and they involved a lot of layering and detail painting with the scales on their backs, and so on. But regardless, here they are. My favorite Lizardman army (I have like three).
All three Behemoths are plastic museum toy dinosaurs (I think by Schleich, but I'm no longer sure), crewed by Lizardman warriors.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Behemoth (no battle cards): 4 pts each
With the Ankylosaur getting Armored (+1/2). The Ankylosaur also has a Lizardman shaman on it; I can choose to give it Deadly (+2) and possibly Negate Magic Zone (+2).
For the non-deadly version, this looks like:
+5/+4, missile defense +3 (with Armored for the Ankylosaur), move 4 MU (+1 command point to move)
The bulk of the Lizardman army is Lizardmen, of various tribal color patterns.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Raider (no battle cards): 4 pts each
With the command stand in the center getting Armored (+1/2) and Deadly (+2). Studly Lizardman commander is shown in detail on the right.
For the non-deadly version, this looks like:
+4/+2, missile defense +3 (with Armored for the command stand), move 4 MU
Among the most feared troops of the Lizardman culture are their Chameleons, armed primarily with blowpipes and poison darts.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Skirmisher (no battle cards): 3 pts each
+2/+1, missile defense +3, move 5 MU
My concept for these was that the Chameleons were hidden in dense jungle vegetation, so I took the vegetation theme I had been playing with for the whole army and went psycho for these stands.
The vegetation is a mix of many things. Some plastic small-leaf plant stuff you find at craft stores. Some aquarium vegetation. And the palm trees are plastic palm trees used for cake decoration and similar.
The palm trees had a bad trunk (shiny brown plastic), so I cut some strips of black cloth tape (hockey tape) vertically with pinking shears (serrated scissors) to get a ragged edge, then wound the strips around the trunk from top to bottom with the ragged edge showing. Painted with a dull tan, then drybrushed off white, and they looked much better, as seen in the pictures on the right and below.
The Chameleons are not the only Lizardman troops armed with blowpipes and poison darts. Standard Lizardmen also use these effective weapons. Less adept in hiding and firing from close range, these blowgunners can engage in crude volley fire.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Rabble (Ranged Attack +1): 3 pts each
+2/+1, missile attack +2, missile defense +2, move 4 MU
When basing them up these troops did not get the dense vegetation of the Chameleons, but still more than regular troops.
This troop type allowed me to use some of the flexibility of the Skink sprue, which has lots of arms for blowguns on it.
The Lizardman culture also employs aggressive "war-dog" equivalents -- Velociraptors trained to hunt and kill in packs.
If you research modern interpretations of dinosaur skin color you get some really cool options; this one was a tiger-stripe pattern that looked appropriately dangerous and stripey.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Light Foot (Fast +1/2, Fierce -1/2): 3 pts each
+3/+2, missile defense +3, move 6 MU
The figures are Ral Partha Velociraptors.
This is an aquarium scenic prop, based and decorated with palm trees and vegetation appropriate for the jungle topography native to the Lizardmen.
