SA 1 - FA 100 and later
This list represents armies south of Gondor but inland, controlling the trade routes, plains, and oases between the coast southern kingdoms in the west and Khand in the east.
Tolkien uses the terms Haradrim and Southron interchangeably; Haradrim means south people in Sindarin. More than one single people (and culture) is implied in Tolkien's writing, however. These army lists differentiate two different cultures: one that exists along the coast and in the more arable lands south of Gondor that was heavily influenced by Numenor, and a more nomadic culture living in the drier plains and deserts farther from the coast. To have convenient name labels for these two cultures in these army lists, the wealthier coastal culture is referred to as Haradrim, and the more nomadic plains and desert culture is called Southron.
Near Harad, where the Southrons dwell, is a land of desert, dry grassland, and oasis towns. They are a tribal culture of raiding and internecine warfare; occasionally one of their tribal or town leaders is successful enough to temporarily unite enough of them to become a major threat to adjacent states.Â
