SA 3319 - FA 100 and later
This list represents armies of the coastal southern kingdoms, heavily influenced by Numenor and Sauron, from the downfall of Numenor near the end of the second age through until the fourth age.
Tolkien uses the terms Haradrim and Southron interchangeably; Haradrim means south people in Sindarin. More than one single people (and culture) is implied in Tolkien's writing, however. These army lists differentiate two different cultures: one that exists along the coast and in the more arable lands south of Gondor that was heavily influenced by Numenor, and a more nomadic culture living in the drier plains and deserts farther from the coast. To have convenient name labels for these two cultures in these army lists, the wealthier coastal culture is referred to as Haradrim, and the more nomadic plains and desert culture is called Southron.
Harad is a land of savannah, with coastal cities and tropical forests further in the south. The nearest equivalent is the Sahel in Africa, or the upper half of the Ganges River basin.
In the Battle of Pelennor Field a third southern culture appears, a contingent of infantry from Far Harad. Almost nothing is known of these people beyond the few sentences in Return of the King.
