This army was triggered by a flea-market purchase of a bunch of Wolfen of Yllia figures for the game Confrontation: Ragnarok. Very nice figures. So how to build them into an army? These guys are clearly fast barbarian types, large enough to be a serious challenge to normal-sized infantry (1.5 or 2x the height of a man). In other words, they need to be fought with long spears and stuff. Which means the Wolfen figures should be rated as mounted of some sort. Which makes sense -- their size and weight would make them awkward in marshes and trees and stuff.
So their subsidiary forces are subject humans, attempting to earn status in their society, and actual wolves (with whom the Wolfen can communicate).
The fiercest and most vicious Wolfen warriors use great blades, often in both hands. They are very aggressive.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Knight (no battle cards): 4 pts each
These troops are also strong and aggressive, but less so than the Claws; they are willing to engage, disengage again, and find a moment of weakness to strike for the kill. They use primitive spears.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Javelin Cavalry (no battle cards): 4 pts each
The Wolfen can communicate with actual wolves, and employ them as allies in their armies. Their smaller size makes them particularly effective in fighting in difficult terrain, where the Wolfen are less capable.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Light Foot (Fast +1/2, Fierce -1/2): 3 pts each.
The figures shown are metal wolf figures in 28mm scale; not sure where I got them or what manufacturer they are.
The Wolfen employ captured humans, who may rise to be trusted with weapons and fight beside the Wolfen. Successful warriors can gain rank this way even to become blood brothers with the Wolfen. They wear wolf pelts to signify their allegiance and fight in open order, wearing no armor but sometimes carrying shields.
In Fantasy Triumph these are rated as:
Rabble (no battle cards): 4 pts each
The figures shown are historical Viking Ulfednars, who are perfect for this role.
Shown are some of the possible Hero figures for the Wolfen army.
Some of them come unpainted; others only need a bit of touchup to look really fine.
