When painting up an army for Triumph! I keep in mind closely related armies who can be built of the same figures. The Fatimids are one such army. Most of the mounted for the Fatimids, and many of the foot, could be used for any of the following armies in the same Crusader era:
Fatimid Egyptian
Syrian Arab-ruled Citystates
Muslim North Africa and Sicily (this is where much of the Fatimid infantry come from)
Syrian Caliphate of Baghdad
Zengid Dynasties in Syria
Probably Tulunid and Iqshidid Egyptian (the predecessors to the Fatimids)
Ayyubid Egyptian (the successors to the Fatimids)
So when painting up this army I built sufficient forces to muster any of the above. It isn't just Fatimids, it is a Fatimid Morph.
Similar possibilities exist for the Norman Conquest period Normans, who can be used for Early Crusader, Anglo-Normans, early Feudal French, early Feudal German Citystates -- in the era pre-Heraldry, all of the mounted forces for any of those look pretty much the same (and many of their infantry likewise). If you go far enough afield the morphing potential breaks down, of course -- Feudal Spanish forces had enough influence from the Moors they fought to look distinct from the southern Feudal French just across the Pyrenees from them, as one example.
All the shields in this army are custom painted (no transfers).
The figures for this army are from Legio Heroica. Brilliant figs. The company was founded by Giuseppe Barbazeni, who seems to have passed away in 2021. I haven't heard that anyone has bought their molds for casting them.
Elite Cavalry
This is a mix of several codes of Legio Heroica figures, with premade brass spears by Xyston rather than whatever was originally supplied in the pack (which would be vulnerable to bending in play, ending up looking like my glorious army was fighting with spaghetti).
Javelin Cavalry
Also with spear substitutions as with the above.
Shields are done with a mixture of Micron pens by Sakura and paint.
Heavy Foot.
Berbers wore distinctive clothing; I've painted their shields as unpainted hide.
Light Foot.
These foot don't feature as part of the Fatimid army, but appear in many of the Syrian army lists that the Fatties can morph into.
