TA 1856 - TA 2509
In TA 1851 the Wainriders invaded Gondor and the Northmen of Rhovanion. King Narmacil II of Gondor collected many disparate forces of Northmen from Rhovanion that had been dispersed by the invasion, under the leadership of a Northman noble named Marhari, to aid the fight against them.
Narmacil II was defeated and slain by at the Battle of the Plains just south of Mirkwood in Third Age 1856. Mahari fought a rear-guard action to allow the Northman remnants to escape, and he was also slain. Some of the Northman remnants fled north across the River Running into Dale, joining with them.
But others gathered around Marhari’s son Marhwini to the west. He removed his people to the Vales of Anduin between Mirkwood and the River Anduin and settled there. These refugees, with the addition of fugitive slaves from Rhovanion over the next 50 years of Wainrider rulership, became the Éothéod. They fought in the defeat of Gondor’s army at the Black Gate and also in the victory at the Battle of the Camp (both in TA 1944) where the Wainriders were utterly defeated.
In TA 1975 the Kingdom of Angmar, on the west side of the Misty Mountains, was destroyed. This removed a major threat in the northern part of the Anduin river valley. Combined with the increasing threat of Dol Guldur in the southern parts of the valley, this led the Éothéod, now under King Frumgar (TA 1975 - TA 2001), to move from the Vales of Anduin up to the Langflood (the upper sources of Anduin in the land between the rivers Langwell and Greylin).
Initial relations between the Éothéod and the Dwarves were good. Frumgar was wounded by the great Wyrm Scatha; his son Fram hunted Scatha for two years and killed him, returning with Scatha’s treasure. Frumgar died soon after. The Dwarves claimed Scatha’s horde, but Fram sent an insulting reply. Fram was killed some time later, possibly by Dwarves.
In TA 2510 the Éothéod, under its king Eorl the Young, rode to aid Gondor against the Balchoth and won the battle of the Field of Celebrant; they were rewarded with the province of Calenardhon and removed there to become the Rohirrim. See the Rohan army list for this culture after TA 2509.
