SA 3319 - FA 100 and later
Khand occupies a unique geographic position between the civilizations in the far east of middle earth (Easterlings) and those on the fringe of what is known to Gondor (Haradrim, Southrons, Mordor, and the Sea of Rhun). Cultures from this region appear directly several times in the Third Age, particularly in the invasion of the Balchoth and the invasion of the Wainriders. The army list here is built upon the description of the Battle of the Plains at Dagorlad, the second Battle of Dagorlad, the battle outside the Black Gate where King Ondoher of Gondor and his two sons were slain, and the Battle of the Camp afterwards where they were finally defeated. Khand has a continental dry climate of grassland and hilly terrain, home of fierce axe-wielding infantry (Variags). The culture is based upon nomadic herders and sophisticated urban centers occupying oases on trade routes; such cities can field massed bowmen.Â
The nearest historical cultural similarity to Khand is in the citystates of the Silk Road, but with the addition of chariots (which are attested in the battle descriptions above).
